Find resource hungry processes:

To find resource hungry processes on your system press Command + Space to open Spotlight search, type Activity Monitor and press Enter. Go to “CPU”, “Memory” and “Disk” sections to find the processes which are consuming a lot of system resources. To close these processes, select it by clicking it and click on the X button on the toolbar.

Close unnecessary applications:

When you open and run so many applications at a time it consumes reasonable part of system resources. Clicking on “X” button doesn’t stop them running in the background. To stop them running in the background got the application on your dock, right-click on its icon and select “Quit” to close it.

Manage start-up programs:

If you are experiencing slow boot then the possible reason behind this could be a lot of unnecessary programs run while booting. To manage these startup programs, go to Apple menu and select the “System Preferences” option. Click on the “Users & groups” icon to select your current user account and click on “Login Items” option. Now uncheck any app you don’t want to run while system boot. Now reboot your system to see the time difference while starting up the system.

Reduce Transparency and Animations:

Transparency effects and animations consume a lot of system resources and make the system run slow. To stop or reduce transparency effects and animations go to Apple menu and select “System preferences” option and open it. Click the “Accessibility” option and check the “Reduce transparency” button to reduce transparency effect on your system. You can also select “Scale effect” from the “Dock” preferences icon to speed up the window minimizing animation a bit.

Empty unnecessary folders:

For smooth functioning of your Mac plan to organize and clean your Mac by removing unnecessary files and folders on it. To start with go to Trash, right-click on it in the dock and select Empty Trash. Next is to go to your personal user folder and find unnecessary pictures, music or audio files, videos, documents, movies and remove it instantly. You can also consider cleaning out your Downloads folder to recover some precious disk space. More the hard disk space you’ll have better the performance your system will deliver.

Software & Apps update:

Each new update offers certain fixes and improved quality and performance. Thus keeping system and apps updated can help you improve your system speed and performance significantly. To check for latest system updates, go to Apple icon in the Menu bar and select Software Update.

You can also find the Software Update in the App Store. If you want to keep your system updated automatically go to System Preferences > App Store and make sure that Automatically Check for Updates is checked. You can also select Install App Updates to automatically ensure that the apps are updated. For the apps which you have downloaded from third party vendors, go to their websites to check for latest updates.

Repair Permissions:

To repair permission on your older Mac OS versions go to Apple menu and open Disk Utility and select your main hard disk from the sidebar. Click on the First Aid and Repair Permissions. This small correction will help all the files on your system have the correct permission. You need not worried about repairing permission on your El Capitan and MacOS Sierra versions as the new System Integrity Protection (SIP) in these versions permissions on files being modified.

Apart from these simple steps you can also try some other steps like restarting your system on regular intervals, increasing RAM on your system, reset SMC on your system, hardware upgrade, etc. to improve your Mac’s performance. You can also use Mac cleaner software for instant results to clean your device for better performance. As a last resort, you can consider reinstalling your operating system for better system performance.
